HB 144 Scholarships

Opportunities for HB 144, DACA & Non-FAFSA Eligible Students

The following scholarships are available to students who qualify for HB144, DACA, and who are non-FAFSA eligible. Please note the scholarships are categorized here by due date.

DECEMBER

DEC 13       FILM CONTEST
                     19 and younger
Make a short film about why video games are important to you. Is it the stories, the graphics, the challenge, the teamwork? How does it feel when critics talk about video games, and gamers? What do you think about the violence portrayed in video games? Be creative, compelling, and provocative. Film your response in 4 minutes or less. Entries can be videos of any kind, including documentary, animation, experimental, satire, fictional narrative, or music video. Applications must be submitted (and films uploaded toYouTube) no later than Friday, December 13, 2013. Cash prizes – 1 @ $1000, 1 @ $500, 1 @ $250.  First place winner will receive a $5000 partial scholarship to the New York Film Academy.                                                  

DEC 15    HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND
HSF gives over 4000 scholarships each year.  The earliest deadline is December 15.  Applicants must be of Hispanic heritage, ne a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident with a permanent resident card or valid passport stamped I-551 or be granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), have a minimum 3.0 GPA and are evaluated on academic record, financial need, community service and personal qualities.  Must complete the FAFSA. Several different scholarships available. Awards from $1000 - $15,000.

JANUARY

JAN 10          BURGER KING SCHOLARS PROGRAM
                                            Seniors
Selected on the basis of academic achievement (minimum 2.5 GPA), work experience, extracurricular activities and/or community service.   Number of awards will be determined by the funds available and the number of applicants. $1000 - $50,000 

ACLU of Utah Youth Activist Scholarship 
Deadline: January 13, 2014 
Requirements: Be a current Utah high school senior planning on entering an accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking student. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (If the GPA is less than 3.0, the applicant is still eligible but must submit an explanation for the lower GPA). Have proof of strong commitment to civil liberties through some form of activism addressing such issues as equality, racial justice, free speech, religious freedom, tolerance, and privacy.

FEBRUARY

Jameson Family Scholarship 
Deadline: February 2014
Requirements: To be eligible student must have been admitted to the University of Utah as an HB144 student and have completed at least one year at the University of Utah. We are looking for motivated students who have been involved in leadership and/or community activities, have a good academic record, have financial need, and are enrolled as full-time students at the time the award is used. Preference will be given to Latina/o students.

Que Llueva CafĂ© Scholarship 
Deadline: February 2014
Requirements: Be a current high school senior planning to enroll for the first time in an accredited college or university in the United States. Scholarship evaluates three key areas of evaluation: (1) Your personal story, which takes into account financial need and other compelling challenges the applicant has had to endure; (2) extra-curricular involvement, which includes anything you do outside of class like community involvement, work, and clubs; and (3) Your academic promise, which is not limited to GPA or test scores but, more importantly, looks at your academic potential for the future.

APRIL

Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund 
Deadline: April 2014 (Applications available January) 
Requirements: Open to high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students. The first and most important qualification for a Davis-Putter Scholarship is active participation in struggles for civil rights, economic justice, international solidarity or other progressive issues. The scholarship committee also evaluates the applicant's financial need and ability to perform academically at the college level.

Honors Graduation Scholarship 
Deadline: April 1, 2014 
Requirements: Applicants must be graduating high school seniors already accepted to a college or university, or currently enrolled full- or part-time at an accredited college or university in the U.S. with a year or more remaining in their education. Additionally, students must have met all of the requirements described on this web page below. Employees of HonorsGradU and their families are not eligible to participate. Submissions must be received before the deadline of April 1 in order to qualify for the scholarship program.

Annual Signet Classic Student Scholarship Essay Contest 
Deadline: April 14, 2014 
Requirements: Open to high school juniors and seniors attending high schools in the U.S. Student applicants must read the assigned book and write a two-three page double-spaced essay (please type on computer or typewriter and do not staple submissions). The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Scholarship Program 
Deadline: April 16, 2014 
Requirements: Be a full-time enrolled student in an accredited community college, four-year university, or graduate/professional program during the period for which scholarship is requested. Individuals seeking scholarship consideration under the "Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival" (DACA) policy must possess an Employment Authorization Document (I-766) at the time of application. There is no GPA or academic major requirement. Students with excellent leadership potential are encouraged to apply.

The Fountainhead Essay Contest 
Deadline: April 26, 2014 
Requirements: Open to high school juniors and seniors. Students must read Ayn Rand The Fountainhead (Student Edition) and write a 800-1,600 word double-spaced essay (please type on computer or typewriter and do not staple submissions). Please visit website for three essay topics to choose from.

MAY

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Foundation 
Deadline: May 2014 (Applications available January) 
Requirements: Open to Latino/a high school graduating seniors, undergraduate students, and graduate students who demonstrate both significant motivation and aptitude for a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Eligibility requirements differ for each scholarship; however, scholarships require a minimum High School and Undergraduate 2.75 GPA (Graduate 3.00 GPA Dissertation 3.50 GPA) both at the time of application and throughout the scholarship period, and students must be registered full time (12 hrs undergraduate / 9 hrs graduate) in a science, technology, engineering, or math discipline.

Alliance for Unity Awards 
Deadline: May 2014
Requirements: Be a current Utah high school senior planning on entering an accredited college or university. Qualify for free or reduced lunch in Utah high schools. Applicants need evidence of good conduct and promotion of the values of unity, civility, and respect for others, as expressed in the Alliance's mission statement. The Alliance for Unity is a group of Utah civic, religious, and business leaders committed to strengthening and unifying our communities.

Abbott and Fenner Business Consultants 
Deadline: June 14, 2014 
Requirements: Open to high school juniors and seniors as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post-secondary institution. Abbott & Fenner are committed to continuing our efforts at helping those who have the desire and ambition to succeed. Requirements: "Money should never be the reason why you do not get an education. "From Failure to Promise" Essay Contest

Requirements: Open to graduating Utah high school seniors and current college students. OCTOBER

The SOMOS Liberation Foundation Scholarship 
Deadline: October 2014 
Requirements: Open to Utah high school, college or university, or vocational school students in the state of Utah or that have been recently admitted to an institution of learning in Utah. The award is in recognition of academic and vocational achievement, demonstrated leadership in school, community or other service activities and financial need. The Utah Hispanic Business Leadership Foundation (SOMOS) is a non-profit organization established to develop leaders and improve education and opportunities for Hispanic/Latino students and professionals.

AES Engineering Services 
Deadline: October 6, 2014 
Requirements: Open to high school, college or university, or vocational school students. Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post-secondary educational facility. You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible.

NOVEMBER

U-DREAM Scholarship 
Deadline: November 2014 
Requirements: Open to Utah high school graduating seniors, undergraduate students, and graduate students. The goal of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to promising low-income students, with preference given to immigrant students who are currently undocumented. The scholarship also seeks to support students who demonstrate a commitment to leadership or service that benefits the immigrant population.

Univision Scholarship 
Deadline: November 18, 2013 
Requirements: Open to high school graduating seniors, undergraduate students, and graduate students. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA (high school and undergraduate). The goal of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to promising low-income students. Americanism Essay Contest 
Deadline: December 1, 2013 
Requirements: Open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. Write an essay not to exceed 350 words on "The Bill of Rights and Me." $5000, $2500, $1500, $1000. (Submit to: James D. Towery 2653 N 950 E North Ogden, UT 84414-2464).

Soroptimist International of Salt Lake 
Deadline: December 1, 2013 
Requirements: Open to high school sophomores, juniors and senior women (14-17 years of age). Eligible applicants are young women who have demonstrated initiative in both identifying a problem and trying to solve it, and who have had significant and noteworthy accomplishments as volunteers. Applicants need to write an essay up to 750 words in which they indicate where they volunteer and why. Additionally, applicants must describe the goals of the organization where they volunteer and its impact on the problem(s) it addresses.

Varies                 The CKSF Scholarships 
Amount: $2500
Description: The CKSF scholarships are available to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in the U.S. You must register to participate in scholarship quizzes that test your knowledge of topics ranging from general "common knowledge" to specific academic subjects, books, websites, and even movies. You will be scored based on a combination of time and accuracy. Students with the highest scores at the end of each competition win.
